Carioca the Crocodile was raised in a zoo in Rio de Janeiro, but she was not long for its confines and wanted to return to her ancestral homeland of the Amazon river. After reaching full maturity at the age of 10, Carioca was flown to the Amazonian city of Manaus where she was thrust into the Amazon river. Her fellow crocodiles called her Carioca, or the Portuguese name given to natives of Rio de Janeiro.
